Fussell apprenticed with Piedmont blues singer Precious Bryant and documented vernacular Southern music with field researchers such as George Mitchell and Art Rosenbaum. He has released multiple critically praised albums on labels including Paradise of Bachelors and Fat Possum, performed on NPR (Tiny Desk), and has opened for artists such as Wilco and The Decemberists.
