Frederica von Stade is an American mezzo-soprano who built an international opera, recital and recording career beginning in the 1970s; she made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1970 and has recorded over one hundred albums. She is closely associated with Mozart and Rossini roles, premiered works by contemporary composers (including Jake Heggie), and has received honors such as France's Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and multiple Grammy nominations. Since retiring from full-time performing in 2010 she has continued to teach, give masterclasses, and appear for special concerts and benefit events.
