Born Thomas Wayne Hancock III on May 1, 1965, he broke through after joining the cast of the play Chippy and releasing his 1995 debut Thunderstorms and Neon Signs produced by Lloyd Maines. Nicknamed "The Train" for his marathon-length shows, Hancock has released multiple albums on labels including Deja Disc, Ark 21 and Bloodshot and is celebrated for his juke-joint swing-infused songwriting and live performances. He suffered a serious motorcycle accident in April 2014 but returned to touring and recorded Slingin' Rhythm in 2016.
