Write and Watch: Chicago: Candy Capital

Join Archer Heights Library to celebrate Chicago history by watching WTTW's Chicago Stories: Candy Capital and have an opportunity to write about your memories of Chicago. This program is part of Letters to America, a citywide initiative commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States by creating space for civic reflection and storytelling. Chicagoans are invited to reflect on their lives, communities, and experiences in Chicago, and how those stories connect to a broader American story. These letters will become part of a permanent archival collection at the Chicago Public Library, preserving contemporary voices for future generations. The project runs from March 4 through August 31, 2026. After August 31, all letters will be transferred to the Northside Neighborhood History Collection at Sulzer Regional Library to become part of the Letters to America Collection. CHICAGO STORIES is an original documentary series from WTTW uncovering Chicago’s fascinating history. Candy Capitol features stories about Brach, Mars, and Wrigley. These are just a few of the candy companies that have called Chicago home. At the time of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, more than 100 candy companies were in operation in the area, producing such familiar confections as Baby Ruth, Tootsie Roll, Lemonheads, and Juicy Fruit gum.
