In Woodchipper Massacre, a single dad goes on a business trip and leaves his happy-go-lucky teens in the care of their cranky Aunt Tess (McBride’s mom in a granny wig). The youngest sibling is four-eyed Tom, the middle one is sassy Denice, and the eldest is upstanding Jon (McBride). As Aunt Tess tries to confiscate Tom’s “official Rambo survivalist hunting knife,” she stabs herself—fatally! The kids wonder how to hide the body, and then they remember the massive industrial woodchipper that Dad rented for the weekend.
This cheerful precursor to Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991) is the deranged ‘80s sitcom of your dreams. It’s wholesome on the surface—fitted with shiny braces and dressed in ugly sweaters—but every smile hides a secret, and the mulch on the lawn is red and gloopy!
We’re also screening Jon McBride’s Cannibal Campout (1988) on Saturday, August 29 at 11:59pm!
