**Turn of the Century:** Chicago-style marks multi-instrumentalist/composer Jeff Chan’s return to his earlier work combining Korean drumming (pungmul) with contemporary performance practices. Informed by music including pungmul, Japanese folk and traditional music, jazz, contemporary classical music, and free improvisation, this richly diverse collaboration shapes a language all its own. The original Turn of the Century, formed in 2001 and featuring pungmul artists Donne Lee Kwon and Dohee Lee, was Chan’s initial experience working with pungmul and one of his final projects in the San Francisco Bay Area before his 2002 move to Chicago.
Since then, Chan has worked with prominent pungmul practitioners including So Ra Kim and Suwan Choi. “Timing is everything,” remarks Chan, “and now’s the time to bring this concept back, through a Chicago-lens.” Bringing together leading performing artists from Chicago’s Asian American community, Jeff Chan's Turn of the Century: Chicago-style - with Suwan Choi, Yun Sil Jang and Tatsu Aoki - is an expression of the Asian American experience through music.
