RIOT FEST LATE NIGHT: BRATMOBILE at EMPTY BOTTLE
Formed in Olympia, Washington, in 1991, Bratmobile became one of the defining bands of the riot grrrl movement, pairing lo-fi punk with sharp, witty songwriting and a distinctly DIY approach. Fronted by Allison Wolfe, with founding member Molly Neuman on drums, the band quickly became known for its raw sound, playful attitude, and songs that challenged the male-dominated punk scene of the early ’90s.
Alongside bands like Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney, Bratmobile helped shape riot grrrl’s blend of punk music, feminist politics, zines, and grassroots organizing. Their debut album, Pottymouth, became a landmark of the movement, while later releases like The Real Janelle showed the band expanding its sound without losing its scrappy edge.
After originally breaking up in the mid-’90s, Bratmobile reunited in 2000 and continued performing and recording before another hiatus. Their influence remains deeply embedded in punk, particularly in the DIY scenes and feminist movements that followed them.
