A forgotten gem that inspired the name of this year’s festival, Face the Music teases a romance between an American trumpet player and a London singer before pulling the rug out from under the audience. The singer winds up dead and the trumpet player, being the last person to see her alive, gets charged with murder. The trumpeter goes underground to find out what really happened, giving the film plenty of time to revel in the seediness of the local jazz scene. Face the Music (released in the U.S. as The Black Glove) is a triumph of mood and the chilling atmosphere that would eventually become a Hammer Film Productions staple. British trumpeter Kenny Baker provides the soundtrack for being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
